CompuServe still alive, has 40k users!

Apparently so, according to Michael Manos of AOL, speaking at the 7x24 Exchange Conference.

Other interesting bits:

  • AOL runs about 60,000 servers, spread across 5 primary datacenters in North America and Europe
  • “Project Ops-Surdity” - decommission unused servers reduced footprint by 4,500 servers in a span of 10 months
  • Lights-Out datacenter is up and running. Completely unmanned, remotely monitored and managed.

4,500 is alot of idling servers to be consuming power and space. But seriously, CompuServe? Now I can’t get the sound of dial-up modems out of my head..
